Ponchos And Shrugs Make A Comeback
Ponchos and shrugs have come back in style in a big way, and fashion lovers should expect to see these items in the stores for many winters to come. Ponchos are basically rectangular garments that come in various lengths, with a hole cut in the center for the head and one shoulder. Shrugs are like small cardigans that curve around and under the chest like a bolero jacket.
This fall and winter these garments should be filling the department stores, with unique belts making a big style statement to compliment them. While shrugs and ponchos have been in style for a couple of years, and should remain so, they should be seeing some interesting pairings this year. Some unique belts have been appearing on the runways this year, particularly those of great width. Pairing one of these unique belts and a shrug or poncho with a neutral-colored shirt and jeans should be the staple outfit of this year's fall and winter seasons.
Since shrugs and ponchos add volume to the top half of the body, it's best to pair them with slender slacks, boot-leg jeans or slim-fitted pencil skirts. The best shirts to pair them with are form-fitting T-shirts, turtle necks or slim black dresses.
One of the unique belts that are in this year will also help to define the waste, in order to balance out the volume of the body. The Argentinean villages that produce a great number of the authentic shrugs and ponchos have had somewhat of an economic boom since celebrities and fashion divas began wearing these items recently.
Though these garments may seem like a throwback to the 1960s, they have been in the Americas for centuries. Some natives even wore ponchos to imitate the capes worn by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. So shrugs and ponchos may actually be two of the most timeless fashions in American history, even if they're only popular every 50 years.
